The UK’s long awaited Gambling Act Review has once again been delayed after Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned from the job after just 44 days.

Truss announced her resignation on Thursday, 20 October, in a notably short speech outside 10 Downing Street. The process of selecting a new leader has already begun, and it is due to be completed by October 28. Her resignation follows controversy over a mini-budget, the sacking of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Kwasi Kwarteng, and the departure of a number of high profile members of staff.

The Gambling Act Review has been underway for many years and the next stage will be the release of a white paper that details the planned changes to gambling regulations. However, it has been delayed several times. Prior to Truss’ resignation, its publication was delayed by the resignation of Boris Johnson earlier this year.

Last week there were reports that the white paper’s publication was a matter of weeks away. However, this is likely to be delayed while a new Prime Minister is chosen, a new cabinet is appointed, and an adjustment period for ministers as they get to grips with their new roles.

When Truss became Prime Minster, Nadine Dorries left her role as secretary of state for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) and was replaced by Michelle Donelan.

There are already calls for the next Prime Minister to publish the Gambling Act Review as soon as possible.
