The Ritz Club and Casino in London is an iconic venue for gamblers, glamour, opulence, and sophistication oozes from floor to ceiling. However on March 16, 2004, the casino became the setting for a sophisticated scam run by an Eastern European gang. The gang won £100,000 on the first night they visited the Ritz Club, then the group of two Serbian men and a Hungarian woman managed to win an additional £1.2M playing roulette the next day! The gang apparently used a computer-connected mobile laser scanner to measure the velocity of the ball, the device was hidden in an old mobile phone and the gang all wore ear pieces and microphones. The device hidden in the phone had a laser in it that could estimate where the ball would land!  The casino alerted the authorities, freezing the winnings, and arresting the suspects. But no charges were handed out since they didn’t violate any law. Apparently these type of devices are not illegal, unless they interfere with the game play itself, at least in the United Kingdom. The group was free to go and were able to keep their £1.3M haul.
