Alex de Minaur began his title-defense campaign with a routine straight-set win over a struggling Cristian Garin in the first round. He exposed six breakpoint chances on his serve but created eight such chances on the Chilean's serve and converted four of them to seal the win, 6-3 6-3.

Lorenzo Sonego had to dig deep against the Aussie James Duckworth in the first round of ATP Eastbourne this week. He lost the first set and trailed 1-4 in the second-set tiebreaker before pulling off an unlikely comeback win, 4-6 7-6 7-6.

Alex de Minaur leads 2-0 (1-0 on grass, Eastbourne 2021). Neither is playing with confidence at the moment but still expect the defending champion to get the job done and continue his quest for back-to-back titles in this tournament.

Dan Evans cleared a tricky test against the former ATP 's-Hertogenbosch champion Adrian Mannarino in two easy sets in the first round of ATP Eastbourne. All his seven matches so far in this grass swing have finished in straight sets, and he won six of them.

Maxime Cressy created 11 breakpoint chances and converted four of them against the big-serving Reilly Opelka on grass in Eastbourne this week. He previously won this matchup once earlier this year in Melbourne back in January and went on to finish as the runner-up there. This was his career-best result on the main tour.

Dan Evans leads 2-1 (1-1 in 2022). Considering their ability in these conditions and experience in this part of the world, expect the pair to play out a close contest with Evans D. holding the slight edge.

Benjamin Bonzi has made a solid start to the grass season. He reached the quarterfinal in ATP Stuttgart a couple of weeks ago, took a set off the world #6 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round in Halle last week, and has now cleared the first-round hurdle in Mallorca.

Lack of consistency has always been a problem for Denis Shapovalov, and the issue just got bigger in recent months as he is currently on a five-match losing streak. Three of those five losses were against underdogs Ilya Ivashka in Geneva, Oscar Otte in Stuttgart, and Tommy Paul in London last week.

Denis Shapovalov is far superior in every aspect of the game, but he rarely outplays his opponents these days, and Benjamin Bonzi will have his chances in this one.
