Arema FC fans at Kanjuruhan Stadium stormed the pitch after their team lost 3-2 to visiting and rival team, Persebaya Surabaya. Police, who described the disturbances as "riots," said they tried to get the fans back into the stands and fired tear gas after 2 police officers were killed. Many of the victims were trampled or choked to death, according to police. This was one of the deadliest sports disasters in the world.

The situation forced the interruption of the championship for a week. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has already come out and said that this was "a black day for everyone involved in soccer and a tragedy beyond comprehension."

Im a foreigner staying in Indonesia atm and this is really devastating.

This only happened because those 'fans' started being sore losers and rioted tripping many over and injuring them. Police forces started to get involved to calm everyone down and to escort them back to their seats but the aggressiveness of these fans prompted officers to use force (tear gas) after some is seen to throw many objects as well as using weapons.

These tear gas caused people to faint resulting in them being stampeded all over to their deaths.

Both sides are at fault. Police had the worst security measures and the fans for being idiots for rioting after their team lost. People over here aren't making it too big of a fuss since they know both sides were just being stupid.
