Max Verstappen got to pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix, increasing his chances of wrapping up the 2022 world title this weekend, as he edged out Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in qualifying.

Ferrari came close, but again failed to overtake Red Bull. Granted, the Scuderia has more poles (11 against Red Bull's six), but that hasn't been enough for the Italians to make a difference. Charles Leclerc came very close to spoiling Red Bull and Honda's party, but he was 0.010 sec short. In the race the scenario could change drastically, with rain forecast, but Charles Leclerc and (within touching distance) Carlos Sainz still seem to have arguments to try to postpone the party again.

Verstappen and Norris narrowly avoided an accident. The Red Bull driver, warming up his tires, blocked the Briton who was forced to run off the track and avoid contact.

On the other lap, the reigning world champion waved his hand and apologized to Norris. The incident was subject to investigation by the stewards.
